Home schooling or community-based schooling is an innovative way to assist conflict-affected communities to provide education to children in a manner that inspires confidence, as well as a sense of safety for families. This program aims to reach out to those communities in areas that are unsafe or areas where children cannot access the local school due to overcrowding, distance, and safety concerns. The objective is to provide community-based, temporary programming until children have safe and permanent access to the national public schools. This program can provide basic education at the primary level to boys and girls, as well as older members of the community who never completed primary education.

Your donation can help build clean, safe schools to provide basic education and rebuild hope. The IRC hopes to build 18 schools in Dohuk, Suleimaniyah/Diyala, and Najaf. To fund one or more schools, or if the needs change, other educational programming in the region, please visit our big commitment page.

The IRC will target schools in Dohuk, Suleimaniyah/Diyala, and Najaf that are currently being used to educate internally displaced and host community children, providing a safe area for children to learn. Many schools are dilapidated, old government buildings (army barracks) in collective areas (such as Fardi Camp in the north), rather than schools, and are often overcrowded. Each school will be assessed individually for needs with teachers, parents, students, and Ministry of Education. School infrastructure projects include water and sanitation, classroom extension, and rebuilding of classrooms and schools. An estimated 1,000 school-age and community teachers and educators could benefit from this program.
