Partners Provide Educational Opportunities for Iraqi Children

The United Nations reports that more than 220,000 school-aged Iraqi children have been displaced from their homes since early 2006. Many have either stopped going to school or have missed many weeks. Displacement frequently interrupts a child's education and has long-term implications for all sectors of society. Several of our partners are working with internally displaced Iraqi children and Iraqi refugee children in neighboring countries to provide a quality education amidst conflict.

New Project in Development: These partners have joined together to develop an innovative distance learning program to provide supplementary education for displaced refugees in Middle Eastern countries. Using interactive methods such as radio, TV, laptops, and cell phones, the partners will enable refugee children to participate in appropriate education lessons drawn from their national curriculum.

Women for WomenWomen for Women International

Through the Women for Women International program, women are sponsored to participate in a year-long course that offers job-skills training, small business assistance, and community support while also providing women with direct cash transfers to help them provide for basic household needs, such as food, water, medicine, and costs of schooling.

Women for Women International was founded in 1993 by Zainab Salbi based on the belief that, by empowering disenfranchised women, she could help “stronger women build stronger nations.” One of the central premises of Women for Women International is that helping a woman helps a whole family. Their data reflect this core belief: for each Iraqi woman who is sponsored, an estimated five additional family members benefit from the investment. Paying school fees and purchasing books for their children are among the most cited uses of these funds. Through its support of Iraqi women, Women for Women is helping to ensure a future for these children.
